Hospitality Academy’s Food & Film evening

It’s interesting the twists and turns Covid has brought all of us. Through this stressful time I’ve got to know an organisation, right here in Franschhoek, that has become close to my heart. It’s called the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy and the people there are doing the most amazing work.

The Call of the Wild

I guess we’ve all felt like this recently… the need for a change of scenery and routine. With lockdown feeling like a never ending spiral to nothing, Reg and I were lucky enough to be invited to what I believe is South Africa’s premier game reserve, Singita in the Sabie Sands.

Fascinated by fynbos

I recently celebrated my birthday at Grootbos nature reserve, a beautiful reserve near Hermanus in the Western Cape. Curious to try something a little different, Reg and I went on their fynbos tour. I was reminded of the rich diversity of these plants and just how special both they and the Cape really are. Some fynbos species have become well known and sought after around the world, such as rooibos and honeybush for teas, or aloes in skincare products and geraniums to make the garden pretty. This only scratches the surface of what Fynbos has to offer and I thought I’d share some of the fascinating things I’ve learnt about fynbos.

Tastes of Cape Town: the ‘wild Gatsby chase’

To celebrate Heritage Day this month, I thought I’d do something a little different and take a fresh look at the city of my birth, the Mother City. South Africa and Cape Town in particular are such melting pots of culture and heritage that there’s not really any single defining culture.

Tagging along to tag a rhino

I was recently given the most awe-inspiring, humbling opportunity to get up close and personal with a very special animal ….. the highly endangered white rhino. These magnificent, gentle creatures are being murdered in their hundreds for their horns. So as part of the ongoing endeavours to save these animals, Reg and I were invited along with a team that were going to dart and microchip two white rhinos in the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

Music that gives

I’d like to share with you an initiative that I truly believe in. My husband is part of a local Franschhoek band called Uncorked and the band only plays to raise money for charities.
